Statistics Korea reported on March 5th, that the inventory ratio in the semiconductor sector reached 265.7 percent for January. This is the highest figure since March 1997.
The shipment index dropped 25% to 71.7 in this sector, while the inventory index rose 28 percent to 190.5.
These numbers show that this sector is in a slump which could have an impact on exports from other sectors. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, South Korea’s non-semiconductor exports totaled US$44.1 billion last month, up 0.8 percent from a year ago, and its total exports were US$50.1 billion that month, down 7.5 percent year on year.
